Przedstawiamy serię British Documentary Classics od wydawnictwa RRB Photobooks. Jej celem jest tchnięcie nowego życia w niektóre z najlepszych dzieł brytyjskiej fotografii dokumentalnej. Dzięki rozszerzaniu drukowanego dziedzictwa zarówno powszechnie znanych, jak i dotychczas pomijanych fotografów, niedostępne już na rynku tytuły zyskają nowe wydania, trafiając do szerszego grona odbiorców.

Książka Early Sunday Morning Petera Mitchella składa się z ponad 90 fotografii. Każda z nich została wybrana ze zbioru pięciuset negatywów, które przez ponad 30 lat leżały nikomu nieznane.

Early Sunday Morning, pod redakcją i w układzie Johna Myersa, pokazuje Leeds z zupełnie innej strony niż wcześniejsze publikacje Mitchella. Nie jest to ani ponure spojrzenie na destrukcję, jakie znamy z Memento Mori, ani zdystansowana perspektywa „człowieka z Marsa” z A New Refutation of the Viking 4 Space Mission to znacznie bardziej intymny dokument przedstawiający Leeds należące do samego Mitchella.

Książka odsłania kolejne warstwy historii miasta, obnażone przez zmiany w krajobrazie urbanistycznym, które stały się symbolem lat 70. i 80. Stuletnie domy szeregowe i brukowane ulice, otoczone z obu stron betonowymi blokami i pustymi działkami, zostały tu przedstawione w typowym dla Mitchella, graficznym kadrowaniu.

Introducing British Documentary Classics from RRB Photobooks. This series aims to bring new life to some of the best British documentary photography. Expanding the print legacies of both well-known and previously overlooked photographers, out of print titles will be newly available and accessible to a wider audience.

Peter Mitchell’s Early Sunday Morning is made up of over 90 images, each one selected from a cache of five hundred negatives which had previously sat unseen for over 30 years.

Early Sunday Morning, edited and sequenced by John Myers, shows a different Leeds to Mitchell’s earlier publications. It is neither the sombre look at destruction seen in Memento Mori, nor the detached view of ‘the man from mars’ of A New Refutation of the Viking 4 Space Mission, but a more intimate document of Mitchell’s own Leeds.

The book reveals the layers of the city’s history, exposed by the changes to the urban landscape that epitomised the 1970s and 80s. Hundred-year-old terraces and cobbled streets sit flanked by concrete flats, with newly cleared ground to either side are presented with Mitchell’s typical graphic framing.
